Why generic financial tools fail freelancers
Most tax calculators assume a standard employment setup — a fixed salary, employer contributions, and a single tax jurisdiction. Freelancers face a fundamentally different situation: irregular income, self-employment contributions on top of income tax, business expense deductions, and often multiple client currencies. GigTax tools are built specifically for this reality.
What self-employment tax actually means
When you work for an employer, they pay half of your social security and Medicare contributions on your behalf. As a self-employed freelancer, you pay both halves yourself — this is what self-employment tax refers to. In the US this is 15.3% on top of income tax. Other countries have equivalent systems (National Insurance in the UK, CPP in Canada, URSSAF in France). Our calculator accounts for this automatically.
Tracking deductions reduces your tax bill
Business expenses — software subscriptions, home office costs, equipment, professional development, internet, and travel — reduce your taxable income directly. A freelancer with $85,000 gross income and $10,000 in deductions pays tax on $75,000, not $85,000. The difference across all tax types can be thousands of dollars annually.
